I'm dropping in for a brief visit to my TPI - Janus Travel Blog. Many of you see the Blog and the Photo Gallery through my Facebook cross-posts. Today, there's big excitement.

Have you ever wondered how people get those dream jobs travelling?

Some of you already know the news about my recent video job application. It's for one of those dream jobs.

I want to become the Transat Vacationer, a video correspondent. The Vacationer's job is a lot like what I was doing already: here in this Blog, the Photo Gallery, and elsewhere on Facebook, through my cross posts. Put all that together. Throw it in a blender.

So, did you pour out the contents of that blender? Perfect. Now, add two weeks travel each month. You've just made my dream job. I submitted my application yesterday. I'm uploading the video here as I write this post, or you can see it on Youtube. What next? I'm going to enjoy a celebratory break from work! Stay tuned on my Facebook page for the updates.

Masada: A Blog First

I've been editing the photos of Israel recently. Today it was time for the Masada images. There is so much to convey about Masada. This is the first time in my blogging history that I know words and photos will not be enough. What to say? I'll try.

World Heritage Sites are chosen for their special significance to the nations of the world. Masada's historic, cultural & archaelogical significance made it one of the earlier additions to the prestigous list from the United Nations. Masada is more; it is:

A breathtaking location high above the Dead Sea on a plateau in the Judean desert

An archaelogical treasure with ancient buildings from different eras (starting with two Herodian palaces built of the Roman Empire and a Byzantine Church built several hundred years later)

A symbol of freedom & Jewish independence from slavery

The last refuge for a small group of Jews who fled Jerusalem after the Roman Empire took the city and destroyed the Second Temple

The site of tragic end to the Roman siege in the spring of 73 AD in which the Jews choose mass suicide over Roman rule and slavery

Personally, Masada became the first travel destination of my dreams, after my father's postcard from Masada arrived many, many years ago. At the time, I didn't know it would be the first step in my journey to TPI - Janus Travel as well as one of the last postcards from my well-travelled, scientist father.

Random Thoughts After Day 1 in Israel

The Montifiore Hotel, Schatz 7, Jerusalem

Shalom. Here I am in Jerusalem! I'll be travelling, blogging and adding photos to a new Israel folder in the Photo Gallery as often as possible during my trip. I return to Canada on July 8th.

Here are my random thoughts at the end of my first day in Israel:

Israel is much smaller in size than Canada. Almost all international travel to & from the country is through the Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv

Even the drive between the airport in Lod, just outside of Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem was a treat!

The Montifiore Hotel is a boutique hotel with 47 rooms in a perfect location in central Jerusalem; it is on Schatz, just two blocks from the intersection of King George Street and Ben Yehuda

Other highlights near the hotel are a pedestrian promenade, a terrific coffee shop on the corner, The Old Book Gallery across the street, and plenty of other great shopping and restaurants in the central area of Jerusalem

"Downtown" Jerusalem is a triangular shaped area with Ben Yehuda Avenue, Jaffa Road and King George Street as its boundaries.

As a bonus, the Angelica Fine Grill at the Montifiore Hotel is reknowned in its own right and has superb gourmet food

In fact, Jerusalem is a foodie's paradise... every meal starts with a selection of antipasto-style vegetables and salads

My photos do not do the food at the Angelica Fine Grill justice... my dinner there was so excellent, I plan to return... soon I hope.

Yes indeed, here come our much-anticipated calendars with the travel photos. We are busy making labels. preparing the envelopes and sending packages with the TPI - Janus Travel calendars to our clients. As our business grows, so does the mailing. Light Your Way to Israel

Chanukah, also known as the "Festival of Lights," begins this evening, Friday, December 11th. To mark the upcoming holiday, the Israel Ministry of Tourism announced the launch of a dedicated Chanukah microsite, where travelers** can log on and light virtual candles for each night of the eight-day holiday. The site was developed in New York in cooperation with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and will "go live" today at "Light Your Way to Israel" site.

With each candle "lit," visitors to the Chanukah website will be able to access more information about travel to Israel. And at the end of the holiday, site visitors who have lit all eight candles will be entered to win a free trip to Israel aboard El Al Israel Airlines to experience the country's many areas.

** The promotion is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 21 years of age or older at the time of entry.

From November 6 to 13, 2009, Karisma Hotels and Resorts and Signature Vacations hosted a FAM for TPI agents from across Canada to Maya Riviera, Mexico. Agents were hosted at the El Dorado Seaside Suites and the Sensatori Azul and highlights included suites, meals, wine tastings, demonstration cooking sessions and the Gourmet Inclusive (GI) University course. Escorting the 26 agents was: Christal Bauer, TPI’s Regional Manager for Western Canada; Corwin Kostenchuk, Signature’s Business Development Manager Central Canada; and Mike Hagan, Signature’s Business Development Manager BC/Yukon.

Ron's "Gourmet Inclusive" Mayan Riviera Tour

The first batch of Ron's photos from the Mayan Riviera are ready. Ron and a group of TPI associates toured 13 hotels in one week. Most were part of the Karisma "Gourmet Inclusive" group which includes the Azul & El Dorado properties. Ron even took pictures of some of the food. I'm uploading them today. Yummy!

Beth McColl, our business partner, went on a different fam trip in the Mayan Riviera last month. She saw 13 hotels in just one day. So we've got the Mayan Riviera! We'll take you there!

Today our series of great things to do during Edmonton's fall & winter continues. This third post is a mixed bag of highlights.

Ron left this morning for a working visit to the Mayan Riviera. Since I'm here where the weather is changing, I thought I'll have look at fall & winter's top things to do in Edmonton. Let's start with some outdoor fun.

Sharpen your skates! There are indoor and outdoor skating rinks all over the city... including Hawrelak Park, City Hall, the Alberta Legislature, and the Skating Oval at Victoria Park. Are you ready for skating season?
Enjoy the Great Outdoors in the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Edmonton offers the largest expanse of urban parkland in North America with its gorgeous river valley and vast system of parks and natural areas. There are 22 major parks and over 160 kilometres of maintained trails on which you can enjoy walks, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and more.

Ski the Birkie - Canada's premiere Cross Country Ski Festival and the largest Classical Cross Country Ski Festival in North America. The Canadian Birkebeiner is currently held at one of Canada's largest cross country ski trail systems at Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, 35 kilometres east of Edmonton.

Have you seen the movies Jurassic Park & Castaway? Do you know where they were filmed? I'll give you some hints.

Last night Ron & I attended a travel industry seminar. We do it all the time. This one was special because we just returned from the destination. It's known as both the Garden Island & Hawaii's Island of Discovery. More than 50 films were made on this tropical isle. Have you guessed yet? This morning I'm looking at a picture book, dreaming of Kauai, & drinking the most delicious coffee from the gift bag that was our table's centrepiece. Kauai is a unique & special place. I'd go back in a minute. TPI - Janus Travel will take you there too.

IATA to certify biofuels

On October 23, 2009 the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced it will approve biofuels for commercial aviation by the end of next year. The environmental significance of this announcement is vast. First, it signals the industry's intention to reduce its carbon footprint. Second, from a technological & financial perspective, it might eliminate some of the barriers to investment in high-quality biofuels for aviation. IATA governs the airline industry world-wide.

Do you remember our friends, Norberto & Laura? Norberto is a Cuban trumpet player & singer. He met his wife Laura after moving to Mexico to play at the Bodeguita del Medio in Puerto Vallarta. Norberto & Laura are proud parents of Jonathan, a baby boy. Their family includes a 6 year old son & an 8 year old daughter. (We haven't met them yet & look forward to meeting them on our next trip.)

Milestone: 150

My first post to this blog was a two sentence announcement. Today is exactly one year plus two days after that first post & there's a new milestone to celebrate. You're reading my 150th post to the TPI - Janus Travel blog!

As a "new travel blogger" I had no idea what to expect and never imagined this would become part of my routine & my life. Much to my surprise, blogging is fun. When other people tell me they enjoy the blog, that makes my day. It's a great way for you to find out about the world of travel & an equally great way for me to provide updates. So, keep on following the blog here or on my Facebook page. There's plenty more to come. TPI - Janus Travel will take you there!

In yesterday's photo of Table 106 Andrew Glass. He & his sweetheart Kelli Rowland were among our lovely table-mates in the cruise ship's dining room. I want to thank Andrew. Today his name is being added to the Acknowledgement section. If you look at the sunset in the image above, the water looks like it's fluorescent. Great job! I must admit I don't often see avocados "on the tree". As a bonus Andrew took time during his vacation to put the images on my memory stick.

Dinners were great on the Rhapsody of the Seas. The company we kept in the cruise ship's dining room contributed to the quality of our cruise & the fun. The entire dining room staff upheld the fine cruise tradition of serenading us, twice. The food was great. The service was superb. Leia, & Willen, our Waiter & Assistant Waiter, deserve a medal. The first photo above shows one of their serenades. The second is the dynamic duo of Willen & Leia. Our table of 10 was a great group. In the photo above, they are (left to right): Hugo & Karene from Montreal, Andrew Glass & Kelli Rowland (front row) from Gibsons on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast, Brian & Irene from Scotland (back row), & Lissi McPhillips & Graham Lutywche. (The British bride & groom from Spain near Gibraltar who appear elsewhere in this blog.) It was fun to get together every evening, share some good food, & compare adventures. What a terrific group!

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden: Founders Tribute

Thanksgiving is a perfect time to pay tribute to the founders of the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. The history of this garden's creation begins with Daniel & Pauline Lutkenhouse.

Daniel & Pauline first visited Hawaii in 1977. They fell in love with 17 trash-filled, overgrown acres on Onomea Bay near Hilo & purchased it shortly afterwards. The couple moved to the Big Island the following year. Dan went to work in the gardens everyday, hand-clearing & planting the vast site. Eight years later it was opened to the public. The garden had three visitors that day. Dan & Pauline contined their devotion to the garden & purchased the neighbouring 30 acres on the bay. In 1994 the couple donated their beautiful garden to the world. Daniel Lutkenhouse is memorialized at the entrance to the garden that is now an educational & scientific trust. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is now home to 2500 plants including one the world's largest Giant Red Lobster Claw Heliconia as well as many other rare & reknowned specimens. Today, the visitor count is more than 3 million & Pauline Lutkenhouse continues the legacy with her family. Thank you for the gift of this beautiful Garden on a Bay by the Ocean!

Kate Logan is the Adminstrative Manager at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (HTBG) in Hilo. I met her briefly during my visit. It was a stroke of good fortune! On Thursday her package arrived. I immediately read Kate's lovely letter then dived into the great hardcover book & photo CD. As I looked through it all, it "wowed" me again... just like the garden itself. The history is as interesting as the garden. Thank you so much Kate! Your HTBG package definitely brought summer back during Edmonton's first snowfall of the season.

While we're on the subject of thanks, "Happy Thanksgiving" to all! Today is the holiday in Canada. I am thankful for my family, friends & the life I lead with Ron. One great blessing in our life is travel. It allows us to meet wonderful people & appreciate the beauty in the world.

Introducing the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden

The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden subalbum is the newest addition to the TPI - Janus Travel website Photo Gallery. This site & the photo collection definitely get my "Don't Miss It" rating. Look for the new pictures in the 2009 Vancouver to Hawaii album.

Hilo's renowned Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is "A Garden in a Valley on the Ocean". This Non-profit 501 (c) (3) Scientific & Educational trust has a history as interesting as the garden itself.

For now, let's go browse the photos. Wander through this "Garden in a Valley on the Ocean". Start at the Visitor Centre. Then walk the paths into the rainforest & past the waterfalls, creek, Palm Jungle, Orchid Garden & much more. Well-marked paths with gorgeous gardens wind through the site starting at the visitor centre. Your final stop is scenic Onomea Bay. The Twin Rocks in the bay are the subject of a wonderful Hawaiian legend. There are waterfalls, a creek, an orchid garden, & many other features to see on the way. The 2500 species of tropical flowers, fruits, plants & trees create a breathtaking spectacle in their 17 acre setting. Don't worry if you get tired or have limited mobility. Friendly staff members will drive you up & down the boardwalk.

The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is my favourite botanical garden to date & the most beautiful place I saw on Hawaii. Happy Trails to you!

For all the Edmontonian music lovers out there, this post's for you! Go see the Benny Green & John Stowell Duo this weekend at the Yardbird Suite. I'm really looking forward to it! Both Benny & John are musicians' musicians who've played with the greats of the jazz genre. Doors open at 8 pm. Music is at 9 pm. In addition to being on my list of the all-time best guitar players, John is a longstanding friend and a terrific person. Therefore, on a personal note... Welcome Back to Edmonton John & Benny. I'm sure "The Yardbird" will swing this weekend.

Moonlight on the Pacific with Thanks to Chris & Lindsay Wallpe

Special thanks to the most recent Photo Gallery contributors, newlyweds Lindsay & Chris Wallpe from Ohio. We met Chris & Lindsay on the Rhapsody of the Seas. Our adventures with the Wallpes, Lissi McPhillips & Graham Ludywche included: several memorable meals, a belly flop competition in which Graham took the bronze medal and Chris "tucked"; a tango lesson; and a drive to a wedding. As a result there are several great pictures of & from the Wallpes in the Photo Gallery. Chris is a fine photographer who seems to take most of their photos, including 'Moonlight on the Pacific' below. Of course, Ron & I send our congratulations on their marriage & their names are the most recently added to the Acknowledgements section of the website. Thanks folks!

Our TPI - Janus Travel website launched on October 31, 2008 with 800 pictures. In December 2008, there were 916 pictures in the Photo Gallery. My work today included uploading & editing the latest additions from our Vancouver to Hawaii adventures. There are a relatively small number of additional photos coming soon from our fellow adventurers. Meanwhile, today seemed like a good time to get a new total. Today's count is 1274. Ron's Big Gourmet Volcano Adventure - Part 2

Ron's Gourmet Volcano Adventure began at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This unique area is an International Biosphere Reserve and the only World Heritage Site in Hawaii.

Ron stopped at Kilauea's steamy caldera as well as at its Halemaumau, Iki and Mauna Lau Craters and the Thurston lava tube. I'll upload more pictures in my next post to the TPI - Janus Travel blog. To give you a sense of scale here are some facts and figures plus links to two useful maps:

Kilauea Volcano has a total area of 1,430 square km or 552 square miles
Kilauea Volcano comprises 13.7% of the Big Island's total area

Halemaumau Crater, at the western side of the caldera, is the largest of Kilauea's craters at about 3000 feet wide.

In Hilo on the island of Hawaii, Ron went on his big "Gourmet Volcano Adventure". He experienced the Hilo Coffee Mill, the Big Island Candy Factory & the Volcano Winery. Sounds yummy doesn't it?

If you're wondering 'Where are the volcanoes?' or 'Where's Cindy?', the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is coming soon. As for me... I went to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens with 2 disposable cameras. My TPI - Janus Travel Blog will take you to both of these Hilo highlights later.

Take a rain jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes on any tours around Hilo's volcanoes or rainforests. Hilo is the rainiest city in the U.S.A. Never fear though, the rain showers are very brief. You'll want sunscreen and bug repellent too.

The westernmost tavern in the world in named for the town of Lihue's harbour, on the island of Kaui. Welcome to the Nawiliwili Tavern. On the map you'll find it al north 21º 57’ 40.14” latitude and 159º 21’ 9.9”longitude. In Hawaii, the tavern is just a stone's throw from a scenic beach, good shops, & the cruise ship dock. It's adjacent to Duke's Canoe Club at the Marriott Kaui. You'll want to stay a while in this relaxed Kaui hangout. We did!

I particularly like the collectible photos of musicians & the sculptures on this cruiseship, the Rhapsody of the Seas. It's a beautiful ship & we had a great experience. I'll blog more about our adventures in Hawaii & on board Rhapsody later.

Now that it’s time to disembark, I’ll let you in on a little secret. There’s a very practical purpose to the musical decorating theme too. It makes it much easier to find our stateroom! How? There’s a classic photo of the great jazz trumpet player Louis Armstrong on the corner when we get out of the elevator. So... take a left turn at Louis and then a few doors down the hallway , turn right at Benny Goodman.

We found it... a perfect place for a destination wedding. Lissi McPhillips & Graham Lutwyche are two of our eight dinner table-mates on board the Rhapsody of the Seas. Ron & I were the only guests at their absolutely gorgeous wedding on Maui three days ago. It was only with a bit of good car karma.. I managed to find the last rental car available on Maui: a silver mustang convertible. Our other new friends Lindsay & Chris met us on the cruise dock for the wedding too. They went on a motorscooter. The vehicle wasn't able to keep up with the limo and they missed the wedding at an amazing secluded Maui beach.

It all turned out great though. Lindsay & Chris were there in spirit & of course, Graham & Lissi are now happily married. One look at the photos makes it clear this was the real thing... true love & a fairy tale wedding. Ron & I send our very best wishes to Lissi & Graham! We will never forget their wedding.

P.S. Lissi & Graham had a terrific wedding planner. Arabelle is sending me her contact information. If anyone is planning a destination wedding, contact TPI - Janus Travel. Whether you want to be "Just Maui-ed" in Hawaii or married at a different destination... you know how it turns out... We'll take you there!

Now we're on board the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, Rhapsody of the Seas. The art & decorating theme is music... which suits me fine. We sailed from Vancouver on Friday. Today is Sunday & I'm having a marvellous time.

Vancouver's Blue Horizon & Sylvia Hotels

It's time to add my favourite hotels in Vancouver to the Great Canadian Links on this website's Touring Canada page. Look for the Sylvia Hotel and the Blue Horizon Hotel in the section of the Great Canadian links. My blog post on September 15th focused on the Blue Horizon Hotel. Today's focus is the Sylvia Hotel. It's a historic building with a great summer time patio & a restaurant that are great for people watching. The location and views are terrific here! The hotel is situated on English Bay at Second Beach, just a stone's throw from Stanley Park at Denman Street.

For visitors to downtown Vancouver, Ron & I recommend the Blue Horizon and the Sylvia Hotels without hesitation. The Sylvia is the place for you if you are looking for a great historic building in a location that's eclectic, scenic and central. The Blue Horizon is a modern hotel with great views and facilities in the heart of the Robson Street area.

What is it about Vancouver & shoes?

Are there any shoppers in the crowd? I'm definitely NOT a shopper. In particular I'm not fond of shopping for clothes and I really looking for shoes. But there's something different about Vancouver. I always find shoes here, even when I'm not really looking for them.

Five or ten years ago my cousin Andrea took me shoe shopping here in Vancouver & started a tradition. We went to Freeman's & at least one other shoe store. It was the first time I enjoyed buying shoes. Andrea gave me an attitude adjustment.

During the past few months Ron developed a minor foot condition. When we arrived in Vancouver he was in real pain. Now he's on the mend after meeting Amyn at the House of Clogs. (The store is at 1280 Robson Street; about half a block west of the Blue Horizon Hotel on the opposite side of the street.) Not only did Ron find two pairs of shoes that are both handsome AND comfortable, I found shoes too. Actually it's more accurate to say Amyn found them. I'd pick up a shoe and he'd say "Let me bring you something else just to try" or "That one won't work." Everything he brought out felt like a pair of slippers on my feet & looked great. I had choices. Is it magic? Maybe. Amyn & his colleague Rose are shoe experts who enjoy selling shoes! When you enjoy your work it makes good things happen.

Have a look at these photos we took from our balcony at the Blue Horizon Hotel in Vancouver. The rooms here have some fabulous vistas. Ours faces Robson Street & the view is still fabulous. We've seen the views from rooms on the corners near the ocean & they're even more amazing. The first photo is looking towards Stanley Park with it's trees & green space. The second is looking west across West Vancouver to English Bay. Not bad at all.

To celebrate this visit I'm adding a new subalbum at the TPI -Janus Travel website's Photo Gallery. Welcome to **British Columbia! It's the most recent addition to the Canada section. I have loads of older images from across Canada but these two new ones and one or two more will be the first in the new British Columbia subalbum.

Well... I think I'm going to like Boingo, the Wi Fi service for folks on the move.

I'm in Vancouver now. This morning I used Boingo at the Edmonton International Airport to establish a wireless connection & posted here on my TPI - Janus Travel blog. To give credit where credit is due, our friend & new business associate, Beth McColl, recommended Boingo when she heard I'm travelling with a laptop for the first time. (If you follow this blog on Facebook the earlier post was deleted from my Notes there. It's still available at this link: TPI - Janus Travel Blog.)

We just had a great lunch a block or so from the Blue Horizon Hotel at Don Quacamole's Mexican Cuisine & Taqueria. Afterwards, I set up my laptop to retrieve my cousins' phone numbers from my email & Facebook messages. It was a bit of a surprise to see the blog comment from Lauren at Boingo that reads: This is Lauren from Boingo. Have a great trip! Please let me know if you have any questions about the service; we're here to help.

So far... so good. Boingo was easy to use & seems like a good value. Thanks Beth! Greetings from Vancouver to Lauren too.

I'm looking forward to this journey immensely. My earlier posts mention the repositioning cruise from Vancouver across the Pacific and through the Hawaiian islands. We'll also have four days in Vancouver before we sail off into the Pacific and three days in Honolulu after the ship disembarks. Our sailing on RCI's Rhapsody of the Seas will visit five different islands over seven days. We're going on some great island adventures too. I have a lot to do before we leave plus a local convention to attend this weekend. Until my next post, here are a few more photos of beautiful Hawaii. Started in Winnipeg in 1994 by Morris Chia, TPI has since grown from a small operation into the largest of its kind in Canada – at over 700 Associates and counting in addition to a head office support team of nearly 50 people. “TPI started as a result of my love for the travel business,” said Chia, TPI’s Chairman. We have a big, big announcement today & it's related my road trip adventure in Winnipeg earlier this week.

Ron & I are very pleased to welcome Beth McColl to TPI - Janus Travel. Beth & I completed the Travel Professionals International (TPI) training program on Friday. That makes it official! Beth is a Travel Consultant with TPI - Janus Travel. Her official title within the TPI network is Referral Representative. It means she works with us, through our independent agency. Beth is developing her own clientele as well as helping us provide service to you.

Ron & I met Beth in 2005 on one of the most beautiful train trips in the world, the Rocky Mountaineer. We were enroute from Calgary to Vancouver for TPI's Annual Conference. Like me, Beth is an avid gardener. She hails from Nova Scotia via Toronto. A group of us began talking about gardens & travel on the train. Beth was getting ready to move from Toronto to Edmonton. After the conference, along with her husband, Bob McColl, we became good friends over the past several years. Both of them are great human beings with too many talents to list here!

Beth is an experienced TPI Travel Consultant. She left the travel industry to work full-time as a computer consultant & IT specialist. This summer is a perfect time for her return to the industry as our first TPI - Janus Travel Referral Rep. We are very happy she choose to become involved in our work. Earlier this summer, my first thought was to "keep Beth company" while she retrains in Winnipeg. Then I decided to become more involved in the travel work myself & complete the training program with her. I'm glad I did.

Winnipeg

Yesterday Beth McColl & I drove from Edmonton to Winnipeg. We left Edmonton at seven o'clock in the morning. Prior to yesterday, any memories of 13 hour journeys in vehicles were tucked away somewhere in the distant corners of my long term memory. The chances I'd voluntarily drive a full day without stopping were zero. Beth is used to long drives. She enjoys them.

By early afternoon Beth finished her last cup of coffee and I finally realized she wasn't kidding about driving to Winnipeg without stopping. Eight hours after departure, we stopped at a Yorkton, Saskatchewan gas station. As we drove away Beth said "It's only a 4 1/2 drive" to Winnipeg and I absolutely cracked up with laughter. As a result, the quip "It's only a 4 1/2 drive” is now on my personal list of memorable phrases.

We arrived in Winnipeg safe and sound at 8:45 pm Edmonton time.

Canadian Government Travel Warning Lifted

As of May 18th, the Canadian Government lifted the travel warning regarding Mexico. The flu known as H1N1 or swine flu was not seen in many of the most popular Mexican sun destinations, including Puerto Vallarta.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (FAIT) media release includes additional details on the recent outbreak of human swine influenza. Dale & Donna are both wonderful people. We love having such terrific clients! Looking at their pictures tells me they definitely had an amazing trip. If you know me well, you realize it's almost impossible to bring a sentimental tear to my eye with a movie or TV show. Yesterday was the exception. Yes, I know El Negrito Rumbero doesn't have the best sound quality. I also know the band sounds terrific when you're there. As a musician, Norberto's not usually on the dance floor. It's magnificent.

The video was the first part of the news. The most important part is Norberto, Laura & the family are all doing well.

My third note is for Norberto. Thanks for sending your email, the video, the punctuation & the capital letters. In January, we traded a lot of jokes about that, didn't we? Please send the names for the Los Candelos pictures. We love you Cuní!

Oh what a wonderful day... One of Norberto's very rare email arrived today. I read the email. Then I searched for Norberto & the rest of the band per his instructions. It made me happy (even in the middle of a less than ideal work day.) It's not about the sound quality... as you'll see. The tear in my eyes was a bit of joy on my face after I saw this YouTube video: El Negrito Rumbero

I'm working on a new Going Places page. It will feature Varadero with a side trip to Havana. Beth & Bob McColl recently returned from Cuba. It's my favourite Caribbean island so far. Once again, the McColls gave me so many gorgeous pictures it makes my work delightful. The first photo that caught my eye is the inscription from the John Lennon memorial in Havana. I'll let you know when the new photos go into the Cuba album at the Photo Gallery. In the meantime, here are the 3 images I tucked away to use on our desktops. It's easy to spot Ron's, isn't it?

On the front page of the Edmonton Journal there's a Westjet ad for their seat sale to Puerto Vallarta and the price is $199 one way from Edmonton. That's $400 plus taxes return, an excellent value. These sales have restricted dates and don't last long. That usually means there's a seat sale from other gateways too. Contact us as soon as possible if you're interested.

Today I'm introducing you to my neighbourhood flamingos and announcing the opening of our first Photo Caption Contest. Here in Edmonton I see these plastic pink flamingos daily all year long. There's big, fluffy snow falling in vast quantities today. It inspired me to take a few pictures. Two of them are included here.

The contest involves adding a caption. The birds need dialogue. You add it. It's easy with blog comments. Ron's suggestion is "Ecuador, Edmonton... I told you to use a travel agent." Since I've been looking at my neighbourhood flamingos for a while, I have ideas too. Maybe I'll add them later and of course, Ron & I are not eligible to participate in a contest. (Any topic is fine, within reason. Further details regarding the prize will be forthcoming. No, it won't be a trip.)

A Great Day in Lacombe, Alberta

We took a great road trip on Saturday. We closed the office in the afternoon and went to Lacombe, Alberta. Lacombe is only about 120 km from Edmonton. It's a perfect distance for a day's drive or an overnight visit.

We went for the Grand Opening of Lacombe's new music store, Graysnotes Music Inc. at 5014 - 50th Street. It's in one of the many historic buildings that make up the town's lovely central area. The store's co-owners are Matt Macfie and Karen Gray. Matt is a luthier who now has brand new workshops where he'll make & repair guitars & other stringed instruments. Leona Burkey hosted excellent live music from many of Graysnotes' musical supporters.

Ron & I had a great day. It was lots of fun. Based on the quality of the music, as well as the crowd of supporters, & the people buying instruments or accessories, Saturday's first day of business is the beginning of a long success story for Graysnotes Music. Congratulations Matt & Karen!

While you're in Lacombe, we recommend the Hidden Bistro restaurant. It's right across the street. The food was excellent. Ron and I are connaiseurs of lemon-meringue pie & Ruben sandwiches, respectively. Both rated at least a 9 out of 10. There was also a great pub just a few doors down the block from the restaurant. I'll be back!

Steamy Tale of Sydney Aystralia

Imagine this... You're in Sydney, Australia driving across the "Coathanger" which is the local nickname for the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. It's your first drive over the bridge but entering it you can't see the other side. You're managing well enough among the many, many lanes of very busy traffic. Perhaps you even take an admiring look at the Sydney Opera House & it's magnificent harbour setting.

Half way across you notice your temperature meter creeping up. Having no other choice, you carry on but soon there's a wisp of something on the bonnet of your little red, box-shaped Triumph Dolomite. While you're driving the last third of the bridge steam erupts from the bonnet in a full-blown radiator revolution. Sydneysiders give you more than one odd look as they drive by in their Australian made Holdens, Japanese cars & other apparently reliable vehicles. Those repeated ads for the Holden come to your mind through the steam. Their motto? "Should'a bought the Holden".

Sydney Opera House Desktop

Years ago I went to Australia. For 18 months I lived and worked in the Sydney metropolitan area of New South Wales. My work was in Hurstville, in Sydney's south, then later it was in Gosford, on the Central Coast just north of the city. I lived in Annandale, Lugarno & Woy Woy.

As a result, the Sydney Opera House became one of my favourite buildings in the world. It was the first building I spotted from the arriving airplane and the first place people pointed out after I disembarked. A few months later I realized that my radiator overheated any time I took my car near the Sydney Opera House. (The car was otherwise fine. Strangely enough it didn't overheat elsewhere. ) Despite this strong association with my bizarre steaming vehicle, I will always be a huge fan of the Sydney Opera House. People who contend that Sydney Harbour is the prettiest in the world just might be right!

Overseas travel is defined as trips to countries other than the United States. I read some interesting facts & figures recently. They included a travel industry press release stating that 41% of the information on travel websites is either incorrect or outdated.

Given my experience, it wasn't a surprise... It makes a lot of sense, even though I don't know the origin of that statistic. More important than the number itself, is the implication for travellers. It helps explain why some of the most computer literate and internet savvy people use a travel agent. Our clients often use the internet for travel research.

Having a travel agent on your side is wise. In the end, do you really want to take that 59% chance of inaccuracy with your vacation time & dollars?

How Do You Eat an Elephant?

When I tell Ron there's a lot of work involved in a task, he always gives the same excellent advice. He asks "How do you eat an elephant?" Then he provides the answer "One bite at a time."

We have a system for storing & retrieving brochures, pamphlets, handouts, CDS, & other materials. What you may not realize is the vast quantities involved. Of course, there's a good reason for it. We give it to you, our clients. The trick is getting it's a lot of work to keep on top of this filing. I was behind. Yesterday a friend with travel industry knowledge & lots of energy helped us out. So, today I want to thank Beth for ousting the "elephant" that was hiding in our brochure room.

P.S. In case you are wondering, we do make every effort to be environmentally responsible about these materials.

Tip 6 - Take Photos of Home with You

Load a few well-selected photos of home onto your digital camera for out-of-country trips. Your pictures might help you build a new friendship, answer a question, or just break the ice. Choose pictures of your home & family, snow scenes, scenic wonders such as the Rocky Mountains, or some distinctly Canadian plants, animals, or buildings. Include some warm-looking photos. Otherwise it gives the impression we have no summer at all.

The operative word here is a few pictures: 10 to 20 is plenty. Other tourists are on vacation. Staff at hotels, restaurants or elsewhere usually like seeing your photos but remember they are at their job. Our experience in Mexico showed us these professionals are far too polite to stop you or say it's too much time away from their tasks.

"Waiting to See You at Las Palmas" with Names

Tip 5 - Picassa for digital photographs

Do you use the internet & digital photography while you are travelling? If so, have you ever thought you were wasting too much vacation time uploading those photos on the road? If you're like me & don't yet travel with a laptop, internet cafes are not the highlight of your trip. Using the Picassa photo management software is one position solution. For me, it was love at first use with Picassa. Plus it's free. It handles multiple image formats & stores for my camera's digital videos too. It can be a great timesaver & organizational tool at home or on the road. The export functions, editing capabilities, & sensible photo storage routines are a fewPicassa features that are particularly relevant for travellers. Download it onto a memory stick & take it for a trip. You'll be able to use the extra time for going places to take more photos!

On January 30th, the expedition was in Khartoum. They've bicycled between 100 & 168 km most days. After starting in Cairo there were stops in Safaga & Rezeiky enroute to Luxor, Eygpt. After crossing into Sudan, Judy & Andrew's group cycled to Dongola. It took four days to go from Dongola to Khartoum in Sudan. Can you imagine riding through any desert on a bicycle in 50 degree heat for any length of time? Next, the group will cycle through Ethiopia.

In Edmonton we have a store called Ten Thousand Villages that sells only fair trade items. Recently we hung a laminated poster we bought there. It's called "How to Build a Global Community" in our travel agency office. Here are a few tips for travellers from the list:

Know your heritage
Imagine other cultures through their art, crafts, poetry & other endeavours
Play games from other cultures
Watch films with subtitles
Look at the moon & imagine someone else, somewhere else, looking at it too
Talk to strangers
Help build local economies from the bottom up in your destination
Listen to music you don't understand. Dance to it!
As travellers there is no "us" & "them". We are the visitors.

Sea lions basking in the sun

We saw these sea lions during the "Islands of Mazatlan" tour at the Mazatlan Bird Festival. The sea lion playing in the water (below left) was very entertaining. It was either trying to get the other sea lion sunbathers on the rock to come play in the water or having absolutely no success getting on the rock himself. Either way, we applauded when the one in the water heaved itself out & had a sun bath too. So, for anyone who likes the natural world it's all happening at the Mazatlan Bird Festival: conservation, ecology, plants, animals, rocks, & every other aspect of nature you might want to find.

The Mazatlan Bird Festival had lots of other terrific guides & leaders. Carolyn Felderhof was one of those people. She was also one of two principal organizers, along with her husband, Peter Beckman. Just before an early morning tour departure, Carolyn came by to tell everyone about seeing a small bird that is distinctly Mexican. At the time Ron & I were waking up with quick breakfast. Off we went... There was a small flock of Mexican Parrotlets. At rest it is small & relatively solid green with flashes of blue when it flies. Great guides - Rene & Rudolpho

Ron & I went on two of the many tours available during the Mazatlan Bird Festival. We had the same wonderful guide for both trips. He is Rene Valdez, the gentleman in the baseball cap in the photo above. On this trip we had a second guide, Rudolpho, who was equally wonderful. He's beside Rene in the photo.

Ron took this panoramic view of Deer Island during the "Islands of Mazatlan" tour. I stayed on the beach & kept company with a Great Blue Heron for about 1/2 an hour as well as some American Oystercatchers, & other beautiful plants, animals, human visitors to the beach & scenery. Ron & I both had a great time.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

It seems like our departure on January 1st to Western Mexico was eons ago. We returned one week ago and that seems like ancient history now too. I've been out of action with a nasty upper respiratory infection but I'm starting to feel better today. As a result, my absence from the TPI - Janus Travel blog was longer than expected.

While I did make a few posts during our time at the Faro Mazatlan Resort, I regret that it's been so long since you've had a update... Hopefully, absence really does make your heart grow fonder & your patience will extend 1 or 2 more days. There's lots to blog about from our terrific journey to Western Mexico. It will likely start with a short post today or tomorrow. Afterwards, I'll be up & running again. So, stay tuned for the return of regular TPI - Janus Travel posts.
